Additional investment in Oklahoma

Tenaska, with a presence in Oklahoma for more than 25 years, is considering a natural gas-fueled power plant in Atoka County. Similar to the existing Tenaska Kiamichi Generating Station in southern Pittsburg County, this facility would add reliability to the regional electric grid amid growing power demand, as well as generate jobs, tax revenue and other local economic benefits.

Proposed Drover Generating Station

Tenaska is evaluating the development of a natural gas-fueled power plant, named Drover Generating Station, that would be capable of generating approximately 1,000 megawatts (MW) of power. Natural gas remains the cleanest fossil fuel for dispatchable power generation, and the market demand for reliable natural gas generation is growing amid an influx of renewables like wind and solar that provide intermittent power.

Tenaska has identified a location near the existing Tenaska Kiamichi plant for this effort, named Drover Generating Station. The proposed facility would be a simple-cycle peaking station, which operates in times of peak demand to ensure the reliability of the regional transmission grid.

This project is not intended to replace Tenaska Kiamichi Generating Station, which has been well maintained and has many years of operational life ahead. On our current timeline, we anticipate a two- to three-year development period. Assuming we obtain all necessary permits and approvals, the earliest construction start date would be late 2027.

Decades of responsible energy generation

Tenaska has been a good business neighbor in Oklahoma for over 25 years. We have built positive relationships here and feel like a welcomed and valued member of the community.

Since 2003, Tenaska Kiamichi Generating Station has operated in a safe and responsible manner, while also providing stable jobs and tax revenue. The plant team collaborates with community leaders, first responders, the chamber, schools and more, and we intend any new project in the area to continue our commitment to collaborating with and investing in this community.

The proposed Drover Generating Station would be additive to the benefits provided by our Kiamichi Generating Station and is not intended to replace it. We look forward to working with the Atoka County community to make this additional investment a reality.

  • Benefitting Atoka County’s economy

Construction and operation of a new natural gas-fueled peaking plant would bring significant economic benefits to the region.

  • Job opportunities

Construction would create hundreds of jobs and provide millions of dollars in contracts for construction-related goods and services from Oklahoma companies.

  • Long-term employment

Operation of the facility would provide jobs for an estimated 10 full-time employees, resulting in more than $2.5 million in salaries and payments to local contractors and vendors annually.

  • Boosted tax revenue

The facility would pay millions of dollars in property taxes over its lifetime.

  • Community investment

The plant and its employees would support various local efforts and organizations, either through volunteer hours or monetary support.
